North America is a continent within the Western Hemisphere region of the Earth known as the Americas or sometimes, the New World. To the north of North America lies the Arctic Ocean, to the east is the Atlantic Ocean and to the west and south, you will find the Pacific Ocean. Although not part of the North American landmass, Greenland is nevertheless considered to be part of North America as it sits on the North American Tectonic Plate.
North America covers around 16.5% of the world's landmass and is the third-largest continent by land area behind Asia and Africa. It is also the fourth most populous behind Asia, Africa and Europe.
The main languages spoken by North America's approximately 580 million inhabitants are English, Spanish and French and its largest cities include New York City, Mexico City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and Toronto.
There are more countries or territories than you might imagine that constitute North America, over 40 of them, but the largest include Mexico, the United States of America, Canada, Cuba, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Greenland.
